The field day on Big Onion True Seed Production was held on 27th March 2025, Thursday, at Viththiyapuram in the Oddusuddan Agricultural Instructor’s Range of Mullaitivu District. “The event was held at 10:00am and was chaired by Mrs. Krupavadhani Sivadeepan, the Deputy Director of Agriculture, Mullaitivu.
Distinguished guests, including the following, attended the event, Mrs. Radhika Sanjeevan Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture (NP), Mr.B.I.Hettiarachchi, Assistant Director of Agriculture (Research), the Onion Breeder, officer from the Provincial Department of Agricultural Office, Development Officer of the Oddusuddan Divisional Secretariat, Public Health Inspector, Subject Mater Officers , Agricultural Instructors, Technical Assistants, Officers from Other Department, Members of Local Community Organization and farmers.
In her opening speech, the Deputy Director of Agriculture highlighted that the project, which was implemented with the financial support of the Central Agricultural Department last year, has been successfully carried out. She emphasized the need for efforts to increase both the production and expansion of not only Big Onions but also Red onions.
Afterward, the field plot was visited. During this visit, the Subject Mater Officer (Other Field Crops) and the Assistant Director of Agriculture (Research), the Onion Breeder provided the farmers with advice related to the activities of onion cultivation.
The Onion Breeder stated that the pilot project, which started as an experiment, has been successful. He expressed confidence that within the next two years, farmers will be skilled in producing the seeds required for Big Onion cultivation in Mullaitivu.
Following this, the Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture NP also spoke, encouraging farmers in Mullaitivu to take steps toward producing the required onion seeds for their own use and eventually supply to other districts as well.
