Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, has stated that appropriate measures will be taken to increase the prize money allocated for Group event of sports at the “Colours Night” awarding ceremony, which honors Northern Province athletes who accomplishes at the national level. He further mentioned that a special committee has been appointed to analyse and submit a report on the prize money as well as other key matters related to the sports sector.
A special discussion on the development of sports in the Northern Province was held this evening (Wednesday, 05th May of 2026) at the Governor’s Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor.
At the beginning of this discussion, the Governor mentioned that we had successfully organized the “Colours Night” event earlier this year, which honors Northern Province athletes and had not been held for many years. I am aware that there were some concerns regarding the prize money awarded to the athletes during that event. That is why, at the same event, I assured that before the next national-level competitions begin, we would hold direct discussions with athletes and coaches to reach an harmonious decision. Accordingly, today’s discussion has been organized.
He stated that No athlete’s dedication or recognition can ever truly be compensated with money. However, we can provide an appropriate incentive to further motivate them. I am well aware that many talented sportsmen and sportswomen are unable to fully participate in sports due to their family’s economic circumstances. Efforts to change this situation have now begun. I firmly believe that through beneficial discussions, we can reach the best possible solution regarding prize money for athletes.
Authorities pointed out that it is practically challenging to award each member of a team in group events an amount equal to the prize money given to an individual gold medalist in individual events. However, there was agreement to significantly increase the prize money for team sports events.
Requests were also made regarding the lack of allowances for personal coaches and the need to increase nutritional allowances for athletes.
After listening to the requests of the coaches and athletes, the Governor instructed to form a special committee including district sports officers and a representative of the coaches. This committee will thoroughly examine matters related to prize money, allowances for coaches, nutritional support, and related issues, and will put forward appropriate recommendations.
Furthermore, the Governor assured that attention would be given to raising and pursuing appropriate requests with the central Ministry of Sports regarding national policy matters related to securing future employment opportunities for those fully engaged in the field of sports.
Several individuals participated in this discussion, including the Northern Province Chief Secretary, the Governor’s Secretary, the Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the Deputy Chief Secretary (Finance), the Provincial Director of Sports, district-level sports department officials, coaches, and medal-winning athletes.
