A meeting took place between the Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Northern Governor.

The Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, requested the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to extend its cooperation toward the development of the health sector and the implementation of waste management initiatives in the Northern Province.

A meeting between the Chief Representative (Country Director) of JICA in Sri Lanka, Mr. Kenji Kuronuma, and the Governor of the Northern Province was held at the Governor’s Secretariat on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, in the evening.

During the meeting, the Governor expressed his appreciation for the contributions made by JICA toward the development of various sectors in the Northern Province in the past.

Addressing the current needs of the Province, the Governor noted that the Northern Province is presently facing a significant challenge in waste management, which requires urgent improvement. He further emphasized that enhancements are also needed in the infrastructure facilities of the health sector.

Speaking on the occasion, JICA Chief Representative Mr. Kenji Kuronuma stated that this was his first visit to the Northern Province since assuming office in Sri Lanka, and that he was pleased to be present and to participate in the Northern Investment Summit.

He further noted that, in accordance with the request made by His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during his visit to Japan last year, new JICA-supported projects are scheduled to be implemented this year. In particular, several development initiatives will be carried out through the Department of Livestock Production and Health.

He also inquired about the impact of the recent Cyclone “Ditwah” on the health sector in the Northern Province and emphasized the need for the government to encourage the establishment of basic facilities for investors in the North.

The Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province and the Governor’s Coordinating Secretaries also participated in the discussion.
