The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN-WTO) declared World Tourism Day on 27th September since 1998. The purpose of celebrating World Tourism Day is to raise awareness about the role of the tourism around the world and to promote social, cultural, political and economic values. Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority organized a special programme at the Independence Square in Colombo 07 to mark the World Tourism Day – 2019. The two-day special programme includes an exhibition, job fair, Food Street and an entertainment program which was opened to the public from 27th September to 28th September late night.
On the invitation of SLTDA, Northern Province Tourism Bureau also participated at this programme. Six exhibition stalls which displayed by Northern Tourism Bureau, Palmyrah Development Board and various small scale handicraft entrepreneurs were set up at the venue. Many visitors visited to these stalls and collect brochures, booklets and picture postcards on Northern Tourist attractions. Also four food stalls which presented by University College of Jaffna students and traditional food vendors attracted many visitors. Authentic food items and snacks were prepared for sale.
