Palmyra Up surging week celebrations were held with the motto of “Palmyra is our environment, our culture, and our economy” in the past and this year celebrations highlighted the “Glory of the Palmyra” as the core theme in all seven days programme. The opening day of the week celebrations was held at Sangiliyan Park ground at Nallur on 22nd July 2019 at 9.30 am under the chair of the provincial Cooperative Commissioner, Northern Province P.Vageeshan.
R.Varatheeswaran, Secretary to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Cooperative, Industries, and Social Service was the chief guest and Mayor of Jaffna Municipal Council E.Arnold, N.Rasenthiran, Chairman of the Palmyra Board were the special guests at the opening day of the Palmyra glory week. At the beginning, guests visited the exhibition stalls and sales outlets of the palmyra cooperative of all five districts of the Northern Province and the artworks of the school students who won places at the drawing competitions organized in this regard.
Palmyra products viz bottled palmyra juice, jaggery, handicrafts made out of palmyra tender leaves, and wood carvings were displayed at the exhibition. A magazine “Thalam” and a composed song in the name of Palmyra glory song CD were released. General Manager of the Palmyra board Mr. S. Pasupathi, Presidents of Palmyra cooperatives and other distinguished guests were delivering speeches at the inaugural event.
A “Demonstrative Palmyra Grove” seeds planting programe was held in the Chavakachcheri Divisional Secretariat area in the afternoon of the first day of the Palmyra week to earmark the event. Exhibition stalls were kept open for public from morning to evening and cultural programs also staged from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm on all seven days.
The closing ceremony of the Palmyra week was held from 4.30 pm on 28.07.2019 with the participation of S. Sathiyaseelan, Secretary to the Honorable Governor, Northern Province as Chief Guest and he gave away the prizes to the winners of the competitions and honour the best members of palmyrah. The presidents of cooperate’ the palmyrah cooperation was made a declaration on eight points to safe ground palmyrah groves and their livelihood. Followed by to cultural programs and debates, celebrations came to an end by 9.30 pm.
