The Department of Management Services of the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development has granted approval to fill 74 driver positions through recruitment, in order to address the shortage of drivers in the local authorities of the Northern Province and to further efficiently carry out essential local government services for the people. Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan stated that this is the first time in the history of the Northern Provincial Council that approval has been granted to recruit such a large number of drivers at once for local authorities.
Approval has been granted to address the long-standing need to fill driver cadre vacancies in the local authorities of the Northern Province.
In accordance with the approval received, while there is an approved cadre of 204 driver positions in a total of 27 local authority institutions, 85 vacancies have been identified. Of these, approval has now been granted to fill 74 vacancies.
Commenting on this approval, Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan stated, ‘The opportunity to fill such a large number of driver positions through recruitment at once for the local authorities of the Northern Province is a historic measure. Through this, it will be possible to move towards a practical solution to the long-standing cadre shortage’.
Furthermore, the Governor stated that he wished to express his gratitude, on behalf of the people of the Northern Province and the Northern Provincial Council, to the Government led by His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for granting this important approval.
In addition, the Governor expressed his gratitude to Hon. Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake, Hon. Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources R. Chandrasekhar and Hon. Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Professor Chandana Abeyratne, for their cooperation in the efforts to obtain this approval, and stated that he expects their continued cooperation by giving priority to such cadre requirements that directly benefit the people.
It is expected that filling the driver cadre will further regulate the use of vehicles by local authorities, create opportunities to provide services related to the daily needs of the people on time and enable local authorities to increase their revenue through their vehicles.
