The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan directed that arrangements be made to promptly resolve the practical challenges encountered in activities to desilt the ponds in Jaffna District and improve their water retention and water resource utilization and to carry out these activities with the cooperation of local authorities.
A discussion on resolving the challenges encountered in the desilting of ponds in Jaffna District was held today – on Monday evening, 31 August 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan.
In particular, the previous discussions held regarding the desilting of Kantharodai Kulam and the challenges currently encountered in implementing it were examined in detail. The Governor instructed that appropriate measures necessary to carry out the work without delay be taken.
The discussion also examined the possibilities of carrying out pond desilting activities with the assistance of local authorities. In particular, the Governor directed that an integrated operational mechanism be developed by clearly defining the responsibilities of each party and ensuring that practical difficulties do not arise.
The discussion also emphasized the need to continuously carry out the maintenance and desilting of ponds in order to protect water resources in Jaffna District and make full use of the capacity of the ponds.
The Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province, Secretary of the Provincial Ministry of Agriculture, Additional District Secretary of Jaffna District, Commissioner of the Provincial Department of Local Government, Assistant Commissioner of the Department of Local Government, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Commissioner of the Jaffna Municipal Council, Irrigation Engineer of Jaffna District and several others, including volunteers coordinating the pond desilting activities participated in the discussion.
