A special discussion on temporarily relocating some departments of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital to a building owned by the Provincial Council for the new construction activities planned at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital was held today – on Thursday 06 August 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vedanayahan.
The building owned by the Provincial Council, located opposite the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, previously housed the Office of the Regional Director of Health Services – Jaffna, but it is currently occupied by the Provincial Department of Indigenous Medicine. As part of the development plans for the Teaching Hospital, several old ground-level buildings are to be demolished and replaced with a new multi-storey building. Since these construction works are expected to take three years to complete, the meeting discussed in detail the temporary relocation of the treatment units that need to be moved during this period to the Provincial Council-owned building, as well as the preparation of the relevant agreement.
Accordingly, it was noted that the Provincial Department of Indigenous Medicine, which is currently operating in the Provincial Council-owned building, will be temporarily relocated to the building located in the Thirunelvely Parameswara Junction area.
The discussion was attended by the Secretary to the Governor, the Secretary to the Provincial Ministry of Health, the Deputy Chief Secretaries (Finance and Administration), the Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, the Commissioner of the Provincial Department of Indigenous Medicine, and several other officials.
