The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, stated that it is a remarkable milestone for a school to have served generations of students for more than a century. He further noted that although many of our schools lost their unique identity due to the war and displacement, Idaikkadu Maha Vidyalayam, despite being caught in the midst of the war, has retained its uniqueness and continues to stand tall like a giant tree.
The third day of the centenary celebrations (1926–2026) of Idaikkadu Maha Vidyalayam, themed “A Tribute to the Mother Who Imparted Knowledge,” featuring an awards presentation and felicitation ceremony, was held with distinction today – on Sunday, 26 July 2026, on the school premises. The Governor made the above remarks while addressing the gathering as the chief guest at the event.
Speaking further at the event, the Governor said:
“The dedication of the former principals and teachers is the primary reason why Idaikkadu Maha Vidyalayam has preserved its identity and continues to stand today as a great institution.
As I often mention, the growth and decline of a school depend on its leadership. Without good leadership, even an excellent school can decline. Likewise, with strong leadership, a school at a lower level can be elevated to a higher standard. Today, many people lack leadership qualities and humanitarian values. It is painful to see a mindset in society where people hesitate to help others.
Therefore, all of us have a responsibility to nurture you, the students, into individuals with strong leadership qualities and good character. The continued support and cooperation of former students and well wishers are essential for the sustained development of this school. This school should not stop with its centenary but should continue to flourish uniquely for many more centuries and attain even greater heights.”
The event was held under the chairmanship of Senior Teacher M. Sreetharan. Among those who attended were the Secretary to the Provincial Ministry of Education of the Northern Province, M. Patrick Diranjan; Jaffna Zonal Director of Education Mrs. M. Mukunthan the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kankesanthurai; former Head of the Department of Education at the University of Jaffna and the old student of the school Professor K. Sinnathambi; former People’s Bank Manager and old student of the school S. Kanthasamy, presidents of overseas old students’ associations, parents, teachers, students and a large number of participants.
