Honourable Governor N. Vethanayahan stated that the Indian government continuously implemented various large development programmes for the better livelihood of Northern Province people; further, many plans are currently under examination. For that, he has conveyed his heartfelt thanks on behalf of the Northern Province people.
The event of handing over the Water Purification Center located at Historical Special Keerimalai Naguleswarar Temple premises which is created under the Special fund of Indian government to the public usage was successfully held on Tuesday (02nd June 2026). Indian ambassador to Sri Lanka had opened this water purification Center. This was followed by a special event and an address by the Honorable Governor. After these events, the guests participated devoutly in the temple worship activities.
In this event, the Honorable Governor N. Vethanayagan further stated:
“Located here is the historically significant Nakuleswaram Temple, one of the renowned Pancha Ishwarams that attracts large numbers of historians and tourists. Historical records state that Princess Maruthapuravalli, who came from India, bathed in the sacred spring here (Keerimalai Spring), was cured of her affliction, and subsequently established the Maviddapuram Temple and institutionalized its worship. In 2015, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, also visited this temple when he came to Jaffna, which is home to such an ancient and illustrious history as well as this famous sacred spring.”
The Government of India has continued to provide its support for improving the livelihoods of the people of the Northern Province as well as for other development projects. We will always remember with gratitude the Indian Housing Project that was provided to the most disadvantaged sections of the Northern Province. Through this initiative, many families today are able to live safely in strong, secure homes. As I was serving as the District Secretary of Mullaitivu during that period, I witnessed this firsthand and know it well. The people of the Northern region will never forget this great contribution made by the Government of India.
In addition, several projects such as the railway rehabilitation project and the recently undertaken Mannar Hospital development project have been carried out with India’s contribution. Furthermore, some other hospital projects are currently under consideration.
“Your support and dedication toward meeting the drinking water needs of the historic Nakuleswaram Temple, located very close to the sea waves, are highly commendable. On behalf of the people of the Northern Province, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to India for assisting in the development of this historic land, and to the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka as well as the Consul General of the Indian Consulate in Jaffna, Sai Murali,” he said.
The Indian High Commissioner who spoke here commented on the historical relationship India has with the people of the North and stated that the ongoing projects for the people of this region are being implemented with great satisfaction. In his speech, the High Commissioner also recalled major development projects, including the development of the emergency treatment unit at Mannar Hospital, the development of Mullaitivu District Hospital, and the development of Kankesanthurai Port.
Many people participated in this event, including Consul General Sai Murali of the Indian Consulate in Jaffna, consular officials, temple administrators, students, and members of the public.
