A special committee has been established under the direct supervision of Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan to monitor the activities of departments operating under the Northern Provincial Council and to conduct formal investigations into complaints submitted by the public.
The first round of discussions between this committee and Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan was held today – on Wednesday, 15 April 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat.
Key guidelines delivered by the Hon. Governor during this discussion are as follows:
The primary objective of forming this committee is to rebuild public trust in the Provincial Council administration and to ensure that government services reach the people without any obstruction. A large number of complaints are received daily at the Governor’s Secretariat. Although the respective departments are instructed accordingly, resolutions are not reached within the appropriate timeframe. Steps must be taken to prevent the public from continuing to suffer as a result.
The main purpose for which the people placed the government led by His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in power is to eradicate corruption and bribery. Therefore, there will be no political interference in the field investigations and inquiries conducted by this committee. You are free to function with complete independence.
This committee must continuously monitor whether the funds allocated to the Provincial Council are being spent efficiently. In addition, extra attention must be paid to public complaints regarding officials being absent from duty at government offices and deliberate delays in providing services, and appropriate resolutions must be secured for such issues.
During the discussion that followed, matters relating to obtaining technical advice when conducting inquiries, and how to address the shortcomings in past investigations, were examined in detail.
The Secretary to the Governor of Northern Province, Sivapathasundaram Sathiyaseelan, and members of the special committee participated in this discussion.
