In light of the controversies and concerns raised in recent days regarding the distribution of Bibles to students in Northern Province schools, the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, has given special attention to this matter. In this regard, the Governor has issued clear instructions to the Provincial Director of Education, Y. Jeyachandran.
Various parties had pointed out issues concerning the initial approval letter issued by the Provincial Department of Education regarding a foreign charitable organization distributing Bibles to school students. Although the organization had requested permission to distribute them only to Christian students, the wording of the initial letter from the Provincial Department of Education was interpreted as allowing distribution to all students, which led to controversy. Subsequently, through a revised letter issued by the Additional Provincial Director of Education, it was clarified that the distribution was intended only for non-Roman Catholic Christian students.
However, as the controversy surrounding this matter continues, the Governor emphasized the importance of maintaining religious harmony within the school system and avoiding unnecessary confusion. He has therefore instructed the Provincial Director of Education to implement appropriate regulations.
Accordingly, the Governor has directed that the practice of outsiders or organizations directly entering schools to distribute religious books must be completely avoided. The concerned organization wishing to distribute the Bibles must officially hand them over to the Provincial Department of Education of Northern Province.
Furthermore, the Governor has firmly stated that such books, once handed over to the Department, should be distributed only to students studying the relevant subject and who require them, under the direct supervision of Assistant Directors of Education responsible for Christian studies.
The Governor expressed confidence that through this proper administrative procedure, harmony among students of all religions in schools will be preserved, and unnecessary conflicts will be avoided.
