The quality of provincial-level sporting events must be enhanced in preparation for national level competitions. In addition, an immediate review should be undertaken to increase the nutritional allowances and other payments provided to athletes, instructed the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, to the relevant officials.
Boxers (male and female) and their coach from Vavuniya District met with the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province this morning – on Tuesday 17 February 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat for discussions.
It was pointed out that the equipment currently provided for boxing is insufficient in both quantity and quality, and the necessity of upgrading them was emphasized. The financial requirements needed to adequately prepare athletes were also explained.
Concern was expressed that, despite winning medals at national-level boxing competitions, athletes are not given due recognition by the authorities. It was further noted that, compared to the incentive payments awarded to winners at award ceremonies in other provinces, the amounts granted in the Northern Province are significantly lower. A request was made to increase these incentives.
It was also highlighted that when nationally accomplished athletes sustain injuries, insufficient attention is paid to their welfare. Moreover, it was stressed that the Provincial Department of Sports should give greater attention to athletes developed by private coaches, as well as to those coaches themselves.
After listening to the grievances of the athletes, the Governor issued several instructions to the Director of Sports:
>>> Visit each district and directly meet with coaches and athletes to understand their needs.
>>> Provide equipment in line with athletes’ requirements and ensure that, at the very least, athletes in the province enjoy the minimum facilities afforded to athletes in other provinces.
>>> Conduct a review to increase nutritional and other allowances for athletes in accordance with the current economic conditions.
The Secretary to the Governor and the Provincial Director of the Northern Province Department of Sports also participated in this discussion.
