“Prepare proposals immediately for Mega Projects that can enhance the province’s economy” Hon. Governor’s directive to Officials

In line with the special directive of His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a separate financial allocation will be made for the rapid development of the Northern and Eastern Provinces. To make effective use of this, Hon. Governor of Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan instructed officials to immediately prepare proposals for mega development projects capable of improving the province’s economy.

The Governor issued this directive during a special discussion held this evening – on Monday 09 February 2026, at the Northern Province Governor’s Secretariat with senior provincial officials.

The meeting was attended by the Provincial Chief Secretary, Secretaries of Provincial Ministries, and Provincial Directors.

During the discussion, the Governor further stated:
HE the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has placed special focus on the development of the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Based on this, the government has decided to allocate funds to implement special development projects in both provinces. We must make proper use of this rare opportunity for the progress of our province.

The Northern Provincial Council has already prepared and kept ready 32 large-scale mega development projects. These projects should be reviewed in line with the current context and needs, and immediate action taken to submit them.

When designing new projects or reviewing existing ones, the Governor pointed out several key areas requiring greater attention:

The projects must be capable of elevating the province’s economy. They should create employment opportunities for the youth of our province. They must enable the effective utilization of natural and other resources in the province that have remained untapped so far. They should ensure the fulfillment of the essential needs of the people at the district level.

The Governor emphasized that priority should be given to long-term projects that enhance people’s livelihoods, rather than merely constructing buildings.
