The administration of the University of Jaffna has agreed to commence development activities in stages on the land allocated to the university in the Mullaitivu District, and to demarcate the boundaries and erect fencing in order to prevent land encroachment.
This decision was reached at a special discussion held this evening – on Monday 09 February 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, in accordance with a matter raised at the Mullaitivu District Coordinating Committee meeting.
At the Mullaitivu District Coordinating Committee meeting held on 27.01.2026, allegations were raised that no development work had been carried out for a long period on the land allocated to the University of Jaffna, and that as a result individuals were encroaching upon the land. This discussion was convened under the Governor’s leadership to examine the issue and arrive at an immediate solution.
Expressing his views at the meeting, the Governor stated that during the period when he served as the Mullaitivu District Secretary, efforts had already been made to establish a branch of a higher education institution in the district with a view to promoting educational development. He emphasized that if the Mullaitivu District is to develop, the establishment of a university faculty there is a necessity of the times.
During the discussion, it was also pointed out that the University of Vavuniya has already taken steps to establish its faculty in Mannar.
Commenting on the matter, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Professor S. Srisatkunarajah, stated that the university is ready to commence activities on the land allocated to it in Mullaitivu. However, he clarified that the delay had occurred due to the lack of adequate financial allocations.
As a solution, the Mullaitivu District Secretary, A. Umamaheswaran, assured that a proposal would be submitted to allocate a portion of the special funds earmarked for the Mullaitivu District towards the initial construction work of the university.
The Vice-Chancellor further assured that the university administration would soon commence work to immediately survey the boundaries of the 44 acres of land allocated to the university and erect fencing.
Following the completion of the fencing, it was decided to proceed with building construction work in stages with financial assistance provided by the District Secretariat.
The discussion was attended by the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of the University of Jaffna, representatives on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, the District Secretary of Mullaitivu District, the Provincial Land Commissioner – Northern Province and other senior officials.
