The 7th International Thirukkural Conference took place at the University of Vavuniya.

The third law later discovered by modern scientist Isaac Newton had been revealed to the world centuries earlier through the Thirukkural by Theivappulavar Thiruvalluvar. Emphasizing this, the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, stated that the Thirukkural is a treasure trove of life principles that remain fully applicable to all of humanity.

The first day of the 7th International Thirukkural Conference, jointly organized by the Moricious International Thirukkural Forum, the University of Vavuniya, and the Jaffna International Tamil Cultural Centre, was held at the University of Vavuniya, on Sunday morning 01 February 2026. The Governor made these remarks while participating in and addressing the event.

He further stated:
“When we compare the scientific ideas expressed in the Thirukkural with modern discoveries, Valluvar’s foresight leaves us mesmerized. For instance, Valluvar simply yet profoundly explained Newton’s third law—‘for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction’—through the saying, ‘Whatever you do to others will return to you in due course.’ Through this, he scientifically articulated the fundamental truth of life that any harm we cause to others inevitably comes back to us.”

The Thirukkural clearly lays down what a person should do and what should be avoided, as well as the benefits that follow such conduct. The way of life outlined by Valluvar is both noble and beautiful. As he states, “He who lives by righteousness will be revered on par with the deity in the heavens.” Those who read the Thirukkural—which extols such lofty human values—and live by its teachings will attain all the rewards of life.

It is a great honor for us that such a prestigious Thirukkural Conference is being held in Vavuniya, in the Northern Province. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, Professor A. Atputharaja—who played a key role in bringing this conference here—deserves special appreciation. He has undertaken many constructive initiatives that strengthen the bond between the university and society. True to his name, he acts as a truly “wonderful” individual, the Governor observed.

The event was attended by the Consul General of the Indian Consulate in Jaffna, Sai Murali; the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, Prof. A. Atputharaja; the General Secretary and Professor of the Mauritius International Thirukkural Forum, Mr. Paanj. Ramalingam; and the Founder and President of the International Tamil Cultural Centre, Mr. Mavai S. Thangarasa, along with former Vice-Chancellors, professors, Tamil scholars, lecturers, and students.
More than 40 research papers are being presented during the two-day conference, with the participation of professors from several countries being a major highlight.
