Bus driver dismissed for driving while using a mobile phone; severe warning issued to driver who failed to pick up students – decisive action by the Road Passenger Transport Authority

A private bus driver who operated a bus while using a mobile phone, in violation of passenger transport service regulations, has been suspended from service, while another bus driver and conductor who failed to pick up school students have been issued a severe warning, stated the Chairman of the Northern Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority, Eng. S. Vimalaswaran.

Further details in his statement are as follows:
On 25.01.2026 at around 9.45 a.m., a complaint supported by video evidence was received regarding a private bus driver who departed from Mannar and, during the journey up to Thanangilappu, operated the bus while speaking on a mobile phone, thereby violating road safety and service regulations.

Based on the investigations carried out in relation to this complaint, the said bus driver has been suspended from duty until further notice.

Similarly, on 23.01.2026 at around 1.40 p.m., the Authority received a written complaint from the school administration regarding a private bus that failed to pick up students of Mangulam Maha Vidyalayam.

Accordingly, the relevant bus driver and conductor were summoned for inquiry, investigations were conducted, and an official severe warning was issued to them.

The Chairman of the Authority further emphasized that, in order to ensure the quality and safety of public transport services, if members of the public submit complaints with evidence regarding such violations, appropriate action will be taken against those concerned without hesitation.
