*Today, the Parents compel students to focus solely on education; however, arts and sports beyond academics are essential for students. – Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan.

Today’s students are constantly on the run without rest. Parents pressure them to concentrate only on their studies. But apart from education, arts and sports are indispensable for students. The Northern Province must once again attain its former high standards in the fields of education, sports, and the arts, said the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.

The event for distributing sports equipment and performance-related materials to sports clubs and art societies of the Jaffna District, organized by the Provincial Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs, Sports, and Youth Affairs – Northern Province, was held today – on Saturday 27 December 2025, in the morning at Thirukudumba Convent School, Jaffna. The Governor made these remarks while delivering an address as one of the chief guests at the event.

The event was held under the chairmanship of the Education Ministry Secretary, Mr. M. Patrick Diranjan. Continuing his address, the Governor stated:
We must encourage young people to engage their leisure time in artistic and sporting activities. Adequate leisure time should be created for students and they should be encouraged to participate in these fields. Only then can we protect our younger generation from the threats of drug abuse and cultural degradation in society. He urged them to use the equipment distributed today to further develop their talents.

Also participating as chief guests at the event were the Hon. Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources and Chairman of the Jaffna District Coordinating Committee, R. Chandrasekar, and the Coordinator to the Chairman of the Jaffna District Coordinating Committee, Mr. S. Kapilan.

On this occasion, performance-related materials were officially distributed by the dignitaries to 14 selected art societies from the Jaffna District, and sports equipment was distributed to 100 sports clubs.
