Wipe Away the Tears and Join Hands: Protect the Environment and Celebrate Simply – Christmas Message from the Northern Province Governor

I extend my heartfelt Christmas greetings to all of you.

Usually, when we think of Christmas, joy and celebration come to our minds. However, this year, our country and our province are bearing immense sorrow. The recent ‘Dithwa’ cyclone that struck us has left scars on our lands that have not yet healed. We cannot ignore the tears of our own people who are suffering, having lost their lives, loved ones, and lifelong saving possessions in that disaster.

Jesus Christ was born in a simple hut. He incarnated to wipe away the sorrows of the poor. Therefore, I humbly request all of you to avoid celebrating this year’s Christmas festival lavishly and extravagantly. Saving the money meant for celebrations and providing it as a meal, clothing, or assistance to rebuild the lives of our fellow people who have been devastated by the storm and left helpless will be the true service we render to God.

Similarly, I bring another important matter to your attention. Data indicates that the air pollution in the Northern Province is currently slightly higher than usual and at a dangerous level.

Therefore, please refrain from bursting firecrackers on this Christmas Day. Let us celebrate the festival peacefully, avoiding the noise and smoke of firecrackers, in a way that does not harm the environment.

The roots of our faith are deeper than the trees fallen by the cyclone winds. In this time surrounded by darkness, may the Christmas light bring hope and comfort to all our lives. Transcending caste and religious differences, let us unite as children of one mother, embrace the affected, and overcome this difficult situation.

Wishing everyone a peaceful Christmas!

Mr.N.Vethanayahan,
Hon.Governor, Northern Province.
