If government projects are to effectively reach the people, the correct beneficiaries must be selected. Therefore, consult and work jointly with Divisional Secretariats and District Secretariats to identify the genuine beneficiaries. Only through this approach can the objectives of these projects be fully achieved, emphasized the Hon. Governor of Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, addressing officials.
A special high-level meeting to review the 2026 project proposals of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Rehabilitation, Social Services, Cooperative Development, Food Supply and Distribution, Industry, Entrepreneurship Development, and Trade and Commerce – Northern Province, was held today evening – on Tuesday 23 December 2025, at the Governor’s Secretariat. The Governor made the above remarks while chairing and addressing the meeting.
When the proposed plans for 2026 were reviewed one by one, requests for funds had been made for constructing new buildings and purchasing new machinery. Observing this, the Governor issued clear directives to the officials.
In many places, buildings already constructed using government funds remain unused. Instead of spending funds on constructing new buildings, renovate and utilize those unused buildings. Likewise, take steps to repurpose machinery that was purchased in the past and remains idle without being used, the Governor instructed.
*At the meeting, detailed discussions were held regarding the sector-wise financial allocations planned for 2026 under the Provincial Specific Development Grant (PSDG):*
Department of Social Services : LKR 226 million
Department of Industry : LKR 151 million
Department of Cooperative Development : LKR 23 million
Development projects to be implemented through the above allocations were also discussed in detail.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary to the Governor, the Secretary of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Deputy Chief Secretaries – Finance and Planning, Commissioner of Cooperative Development Department, relevant Departmental Directors and Assistant Commissioners of Cooperative Development.
