The Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, paid an on-site visit this afternoon – on Sunday 21 December 2025, to the Iranaimadu Tank, which serves as the lifeline of agriculture in the Northern Province.
After attending the President’s Fund scholarship award ceremony held in Kilinochchi this morning as the Chief Guest, the Prime Minister proceeded to the Iranaimadu Tank in the afternoon. During the visit, she engaged in detailed discussions with the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, and relevant officials regarding water management and utilization of the tank.
The Prime Minister enquired into the Maha and Yala season cultivations carried out using water from the Iranaimadu Tank, as well as the water requirements of farmers. She also sought detailed explanations from officials regarding the inland fishing industry dependent on the tank and the livelihood conditions of the fishermen.
The Prime Minister further questioned officials extensively about the safety of the tank during recent adverse weather conditions and flood situations, as well as the emergency measures implemented in relation to water management. Preparations to face similar disasters in the future were also discussed during this visit.
Special attention was given by the Prime Minister to the drinking water shortages faced by the people of the Kilinochchi and Jaffna districts. She held consultations with officials on the progress of projects currently being implemented to address this issue, as well as on new projects proposed for the future.
Accompanying the Prime Minister on this visit were the Hon. Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne; the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan; the Hon. Deputy Minister of Cooperative Development, Upali Samarasinghe; the Kilinochchi District Secretary, S. Muralitharan; the Provincial Director of Irrigation Department, Northern Province; the Deputy Director of Irrigation Department – Kilinochchi District and senior officials, including the Irrigation Engineer in charge of the Iranaimadu Tank.
