Governor Hon. N. Vethanayahan directly meets the people of Kokkilai, who have been isolated due to the disruption of access via the Nayaaru Bridge

The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, undertook a visit yesterday – on Friday 05 December 2025, to the Mullaitivu District to inspect areas affected by the recent disaster and to participate in the mobile service conducted under the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative.

Organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government, the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, and the Mullaitivu District Secretariat, the Governor took part in the mobile services and special public welfare programmes conducted in the Divisional Secretariat areas of Oddusuddan, Puthukkudiyiruppu, and Karaithuraippattu, under the national programme “Clean Sri Lanka – A Unified and Sustainable Nation.”

During this visit, the Hon. Governor distributed relief assistance to those affected by the disaster, as well as cheques issued by the government for cleaning and rehabilitating damaged houses. He also handed over special assistance provided through the Department of Social Services to the public.

In addition, the Governor personally inspected the infrastructure damaged by the disaster. He visited the Peraru Bridge on the Oddusuddan–Puthukkudiyiruppu main road, which had collapsed but was immediately repaired and restored for public transport by the Road Development Department – Northern Province .

Furthermore, due to the disconnection of access via the Nayaaru Bridge, the people of Kokkilai had become isolated from the rest of the district. The Governor visited them in person and inquired about their situation. He also inspected the disaster-affected roads in the Welioya Divisional Secretariat area.

The Governor was accompanied on this field visit by the Mullaitivu District Secretary, the District Disaster Management Assistant Director, Divisional Secretaries, and several other senior officials.
