Except Jaffna, the other four districts have suffered extensive infrastructure damage; I am in the field to ensure that the people return to normal life ” – Governor’s statement after visiting Vavuniya and Kilinochchi

In the Northern Province, the four districts other than Jaffna District have faced very severe destruction and extensive infrastructure damage due to the floods. Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan of Northern Province stated that he had come here to personally inspect these areas, accelerate reconstruction work plans through the provincial administration, and ensure that the people return to normal life.

The Governor of the Northern Province undertook a special monitoring visit today – on Wednesday 03 December 2025, to the flood-affected Vavuniya and Kilinochchi districts.

During the Vavuniya visit, Hon. Deputy Minister and Chairman of the Vavuniya District Coordinating Committee Upali Samarasinghe, Vavuniya District Secretary Mr. P.A. Sarathchandra, Additional District Secretary Mr, N. Kamalathasan, and Assistant Commissioner of Local Government – Vavuviya Mr. Rathees accompanied the Governor and inspected the affected areas.

The team met with people staying at the welfare centre in Poovarasankulam Nithiyanagar Logeswara Vidyalayam. The affected people told the team: “Although we moved to safe locations as per the early warnings given by the authorities, we were unable to bring our livestock, which is our livelihood. This time the water level rose suddenly much higher than in previous years, causing us great hardship.” The Governor instructed the officials to take immediate sanitary measures to bury the dead livestock.

When the team met 39 families from Shanmugapuram staying at Sri Subramaniya Vidyalayam in Cheddikulam and Kalkankulam, the people complained that they were not properly informed about the opening of the Pavatkulam radial gates. They said they are affected every year, and this time they have lost their homes, documents, property, and livestock, leaving them with nothing. They requested to be resettled elsewhere and stated they would remain in the welfare centre until that happens.

Responding to this, the District Secretary assured, in the presence of the Governor and the Deputy Minister, that arrangements would be speedily made to provide temporary accommodation and to permanently resettle them in another location.

The Governor inspected the Poovarashankulam–Chettikulam road that had been overturned by the floods and instructed the Road Development Authority to immediately repair it to make it usable for the public.

Due to a breach in a tank bund, the Andiyapuliyankulam–Puthukulam road has been disconnected. Instructions were given to stop the outflow of water with the help of the security forces and to take steps to reconstruct the road.

At a meeting held at the Vavuniya District Secretariat, cleaning of urban areas and health precautionary measures were also discussed.

Meanwhile, the Governor and the Deputy Minister distributed relief packages to the affected people in the Maruthamadu area.

After Vavuniya, the Governor travelled to Kilinochchi and, together with the District Secretary, inspected the Pannankandi area. The main road to Vaddakachchi had been split and traffic was blocked; the Governor reviewed the temporary restoration work being carried out by the Road Development Department.
