A discussion on the development plans to be implemented in the cities of Vavuniya and Jaffna under the special project to develop 10 major cities was held under the chairmanship of Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan.

A high-level discussion on the development initiatives to be undertaken in Vavuniya and Jaffna—cities included in Sri Lanka’s special project to develop 10 major cities—was held today – on Tuesday 25 November 2025, at the Governor’s Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.

During the meeting, it was noted that these projects will be implemented with the full cooperation of the Provincial Director of the Urban Development Authority, public representatives, and the relevant government departments.

The draft plan prepared by the Urban Development Authority for the Vavuniya District was presented yesterday with the participation of the relevant stakeholders of the district. Based on those consultations, four key areas to be prioritized in the Vavuniya city development were identified, and the Governor granted approval for them.

In the Jaffna District, detailed discussions were held on the projects to be executed within the Jaffna Municipal Council limits. Depending on the expected allocation of funds for the project, those initiatives that can be implemented immediately were also identified.

Additionally, the Governor instructed officials to submit a separate request to the Ministry regarding the development of the Jaffna commercial complex.

The meeting was attended by the Mayor of the Jaffna Municipal Council, the Chief Secretary of the Northern Province, the Secretary to the Governor – Northern Province, the Jaffna District Secretary, the Deputy Chief Secretary – Planning of the Northern Province, the Commissioner of Local Government, the Provincial Land Commissioner, the Commissioners of the Jaffna and Vavuniya Municipal Councils, officials of the Urban Development Authority, the Road Development Authority, and officers of the Department of Highways, along with several other senior officials.
