“The University of Jaffna spent half of its 50-year journey amidst the turmoil of war that afflicted this region. Despite facing such dire and terrifying circumstances, it rose to stand on par with other leading universities in Sri Lanka in a remarkably short time. I am proud to be an alumnus of such a resilient institution,” said Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The University of Jaffna, originally established on the 6th of October in 1974 as the Jaffna Campus of the University of Sri Lanka, has since grown into a fully-fledged university. Marking its 50th anniversary, the institution celebrated its Golden Jubilee today, Monday, 6th October 2025, at the Kailasapathy Auditorium.
The event was held under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah, with Senior Professor Kapila Senevirathne, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, serving as the Chief Guest. The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, attended as the Special Guest. All 12 faculties of the university participated in the celebration, commemorating five decades of academic excellence and growth.
The Governor further stated in his speech on the occasion:
“The University of Jaffna is not merely an institution of buildings and classrooms. It is a living symbol of the Northern Province’s rich educational heritage and a driving force for regional development. For fifty years, it has stood as a pillar of progress across diverse fields — social, cultural, political, scientific, and technological.
The University has spread its wings by establishing new faculties in Kilinochchi. Today, with more than 12 faculties, the long-cherished dream of ‘Education for All’ has become a reality, paving the way for significant social transformation. The University of Jaffna has truly become a ‘temple of knowledge’ for the region and beyond.”
“In order for this University to truly embody its noble motto, ‘Knowledge is seeing the truth,’ I wish to make a special recommendation.
I propose the establishment of a dedicated publishing house — the Jaffna University Press.
This publishing house would serve as a vital platform for disseminating the outstanding knowledge and research produced within the University. By publishing research papers, academic articles, and rare manuscripts at affordable costs, it will significantly extend the reach of scholarly resources beyond the University’s walls — making knowledge more accessible, impactful, and enduring.”
“Only when knowledge is shared and put into practice does it transform into true wisdom. The proposed publishing house will serve as an open educational resource — benefiting students, researchers, policymakers, and the wider public. In doing so, it will further enhance the University’s contribution to society.
Today, we can proudly pledge that the next fifty years will be even stronger chapters, built upon this illustrious legacy. May the University of Jaffna continue to shine as a beacon of knowledge — fostering learning, inspiring innovation, and guiding the progress of our motherland,” he said.
“It is noteworthy that a book launch and the release of a commemorative postage stamp were held to mark the Golden Jubilee celebration.”
