We can truly understand the importance of books from the tragic burning of the Jaffna Library. If we reflect on why the library, with its thousands of books, was deliberately set on fire despite the presence of many other buildings in Jaffna, we realize the immense value of books. This was stated by the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The Governor made this remark while delivering the Chief Guest address at the inauguration of the second International Book Fair jointly organized by the Jaffna Chamber of Commerce and Industry and ‘Engada Puththakangal’ Foundation at the Thiruvalluvar Cultural Hall in Jaffna on 15.08.2025.
In her speech, senior writer Kokila Mahendran eloquently highlighted the importance of books and the value of physically engaging with them. He noted that it is frustrating to be interrupted while reading, especially when we are deeply immersed in a book. A good book should leave us eager to pick up the next one, and reading should never feel tiresome. He further pointed out that in today’s competitive examinations, in addition to questions that test intelligence, general knowledge questions are also included. Such knowledge, he emphasized, can only be gained through reading books.
The organizers of this event faced certain obstacles from our officials, which I deeply regret. I have repeatedly emphasized the need for a change in the mindset of our officials. The real issue lies in they are not thinking positively. Unfortunately, they are not making the necessary arrangements for initiatives that have the potential to generate income for us.
“We invite investors, yet some of our officials fail to provide them with full cooperation. I do not understand why they behave in this manner. Tax revenue will only increase if investors arrive, and our progress depends on that revenue. I cannot comprehend why the authorities fail to see this. We are determined to bring about a change in this situation,” said the Governor.
At this event, the Governor also presented prizes to the winners of the competition organized by the Engada Puththakangal Foundation.
