I will prioritize addressing the challenges faced by the people of the island and work diligently to resolve them – Hon. Governor.

“The post of Assistant Government Agent for Neduntheevu marks my first appointment. I am fully aware of the challenges faced by the people of this island. I will give priority to this region and do my utmost to address and resolve your concerns,” said the Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.

The Outpatient Department building of the Nainativu District Hospital, constructed by the Sri Lanka Navy with financial support from the Sri Lanka Red Cross and the Jaffna Regional Health Services Office, was officially inaugurated on Saturday morning, 12 July 2025. The project was initiated by Mr. and Mrs. Sivaprakasam Vasan and Jesintha, with generous financial contributions from the Nainativu diaspora and the German Red Cross – Warendorf Branch.

The building cost 66 million rupees and the furniture and medical equipment were donated by the Nainadhivu Nagapoosani Amman Temple Trustees, the Department of Health, and well-wishers.

The event was graced by the presence of Minister of Health and Media Hon. Nalinda Jayatissa, Minister of Fisheries Hon. R. Chandrasekaran, Members of Parliament Hon. K. Ilankuumaran and Hon. S. Sribavanandaraja, Northern Provincial Chief Secretary Mrs. Thanuja Murugesan, Provincial Secretary of Health Mrs. P. Jayarani, Northern Provincial Director of Health Services Dr. Saman Pathirana, Jaffna Regional Director of Health Services Dr. A. Ketheeswaran, Medical Officers from Kayts and Velanai, Navy personnel, representatives of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, and many others.

In his speech, the Governor stated that the new Outpatient Department building of the hospital stands as a prime example of how development projects can be successfully completed through the active participation and cooperation of the people. He commended the Sri Lanka Navy for completing and handing over the building in an exemplary manner. The Governor noted that he has been working with the Navy since 1991, and acknowledged their contributions to various reconstruction and development efforts in the region over the years, including the development of ports

The Governor further stated that His Excellency President Anura Kumara has directed the World Bank to undertake development initiatives in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Representatives from the World Bank have already visited these areas to assess the needs on the ground. He expressed confidence that the development projects are likely to commence next year. The Governor also noted that several landing sites in the island regions may be renovated as part of this effort, which he believes will contribute significantly to the growth of the local tourism sector.
