The Tamil people possess a distinct culture, with their own customs and traditions. It is our duty to preserve and protect them in any situation. These types of cultural festivals are conducted to protect them, said the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The Velanai Divisional Secretariat, along with Department of Cultural Affairs, Northern Province, and the Divisional Cultural Council jointly organized the Divisional Cultural Festival at the theatre artist Late. Sellaiya Sivarasa Hall of the Velanai Thuraiyur Aiyanar Community Center today, Tuesday (24.06.2025).
The event was chaired by Velanai Divisional Secretary K. Sivakaran, and was attended by Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs Mrs. N. Laghini, retired Chief Secretary E. Ilangovan, and Saravanai West Senior Artist Kalabhushanam M.Kanthaiyah as the guest of honor.
The vehicle processions representing Tamil culture started from the Velanai Divisional Secretariat premises. Cultural dances were also performed. At the stage events, grants were given to the artists and felicitations were held.
In his address as the Chief Guest, the Governor stated that the emergence of young artists has gradually declined. Cultural festivals like this not only serve to remind the next generation of our rich heritage but also provide a platform to encourage and recognize young artists.
“It is essential to engage today’s youth in artistic and cultural events to prevent them from going astray. In the past, every village regularly hosted various cultural programs like koothu and gatherings, but those traditions have gradually faded. We must revive these practices and inspire the younger generation to participate and thrive once again.”
“It is more appropriate to hold such cultural festivals in the community halls of the villages. The residents of Velanai Thurayur have also played a key role in organizing this event. Their contribution made it possible to conduct the festival successfully. I would also like to commend the Divisional Secretariat for their excellent time management throughout the event,” he said.
