The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, stated that everyone must unite to transform the Northern Province not just on a map, but into a vibrant, prosperous, and unforgettable experience for every tourist and visitor.
The certificate awarding ceremony for students who participated in the training program titled ‘Rediscovering Northern Sri Lanka: Empowering Youth to Create a New Tourism Identity’, organized by the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank, was held today – Thursday 13 November 2025, at the ‘North Gate’ Hotel in Jaffna.
Addressing the event as the chief guest, Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan further stated:
The Northern Province is a land of deep history, resilience, and unique beauty. Yet, for too long, its tourism story has only been partially told. The time has come for today’s youth to write its next chapter.
Tourism must go beyond beaches and wildlife it should reveal the soul and heritage of the Northern Province. The Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, Jaffna Fort, the cooking traditions of its people, and their hospitality, these are all examples of the true identity of the North.
Youth must use their knowledge, skills, and innovation to create an authentic tourism experience for the North. This is not just about tomorrow’s hotels, it is about digital tools, sustainable practices, and community benefit.
Creating a unique, sustainable, and truly local identity for the Northern Province lies in the hands of the youth. The government and industry can build the foundation, but it is your passion and professionalism that will drive the success of Northern tourism. Do not wait for opportunities to come to you, create them, said the Governor.
At the same time, the Governor emphasized the importance of cleanliness and environmental protection in Jaffna city.
‘With Jaffna selected as a top tourism destination, the public must also contribute to keeping the city clean. This is our responsibility,’ he said. He also noted that air and sea transport facilities for the Northern Province are being expanded, and efforts are underway to reduce travel time between Colombo and Jaffna.
The event was attended by the Director of the Asian Development Bank’s Sri Lanka Resident Mission, the Chief Executive Officer of Fox Resorts, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, and several others.
