To observe firsthand the disaster situations that have arisen in the Northern Province, Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan undertook a field visit.

In order to directly assess the severe disaster situations that have occurred in the Northern Province, the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, carried out an emergency field visit on Saturday, 29 November 2025, to the Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, and Mullaitivu districts.

The Governor, who examined the situation on the ground together with District Secretaries and Heads of Departments, instructed that the relief efforts for the affected people be expedited.

The Governor first travelled to the Kilinochchi District Secretariat, where he held discussions with District Secretary Mr. S. Muralitharan. He also inquired about the rescue operations carried out last night and early this morning.

Visiting the temporary shelter established at Paranthan Hindu Maha Vidyalayam, the Governor met with the people from the areas of Paranthan, Kumarapuram, and Umayalpuram who were accommodated there. He inquired about the food and basic facilities provided to them and discussed their needs.

The Governor inspected the rescue operations being carried out with the assistance of the Navy and Army in the Kandavalai Divisional Secretariat area. Despite flood warnings having been issued, some residents had refused to evacuate; the Governor instructed officials to expedite the evacuation of those residents to safe locations considering the severity of the situation.

The Governor also inspected the bridge near the Kandavalai Divisional Secretariat on the Mullaitivu–Paranthan main road, which had begun to collapse due to flooding, resulting in the disruption of transport to the area.

The Governor proceeded directly to the Iranaimadhu tank and examined the situation with the Provincial Irrigation Department Director, Engineer T. Rajagopu.

He inspected the sluice gates of the tank and the spread of water released through the spillway, as well as the erosion observed in the bund at the first step area. Residents from the vulnerable areas had already been evacuated. The Governor instructed that necessary preventive measures be carried out promptly to stop further erosion of the bund.

Travelling to the Nedunkeni Regional Hospital in the Vavuniya District, the Governor inspected the flood damage there. He also observed the canals surrounding the hospital that had caused the flooding and assured that a discussion involving all relevant parties would soon be held to find a permanent solution.

Finally, the Governor visited the Mullaitivu District Secretariat and held discussions with District Secretary Mr. A. Umamaheswaran.

The District Secretary explained the disruptions in electricity and telecommunications in the district, damage to the Nayaaru bridge, and the disconnection of several roads.

Commenting on obtaining assistance from volunteers, the Governor stated that when proper requests are made through the District Secretariats, coordination with relevant parties can be done to secure such assistance.
