The services rendered by Saiva scholar S. Sellathurai to Saivism and Tamil are immeasurable. Beyond his contributions, his personal virtues were admirable. That is why he continues to be remembered by everyone even after his passing. The life stories of such individuals must be shared with today’s youth and officials, stated the Hon. Governor of Northern Province N. Vethanayahan.
The fourth death anniversary and award ceremony of the Saiva scholar S. Sellathurai Foundation was held this evening – on Tuesday 21st October 2025, at Ilavalai Meikandan Maha Vidyalayam, under the chairmanship of T. Thayananthan, the Foundation’s President.
Participating as the Chief Guest, the Governor said that those who serve society will continue to be honoured even after their death, and Saiva scholar S. Sellathurai stands as a shining example of this truth.
“Today, some people, though holding high positions, are not celebrated by society because they do not respect or help those within it. Considering themselves superior, they disregard the community. Such individuals will never be remembered by society.
“But Saiva scholar S. Sellathurai, though a senior in age, was known for his humility—he respected and interacted warmly with the younger generation. Today’s officials must learn from this. Unfortunately, many officials show little regard when interacting with the public. Several people have expressed to me their concerns about this. It is worrying that some officials, in an attempt to assert superiority, make citizens wait unnecessarily or dismiss them outright,” the Governor remarked.
“By remembering individuals like Saiva scholar S. Sellathurai, we must highlight and pass on their noble qualities,” he added.
The event was also attended by Dr. Para. Nanthakumar, Medical Officer of Health – Tellippalai Division, as a special guest. Dr. S. Prasad, General Physician at Point Pedro Base Hospital, delivered the memorial address. It is noteworthy that retired teacher Mrs. Sivakami Tharmapala was presented with the Tamil Scholar Award in recognition of her contributions.
