“The National People’s Power Government is proving its commitment through action, not words. I believe the Northern Province can be developed within this government’s tenure,” said the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The inaugural ceremony of the Reconstruction of the Kurikadduvan Jetty Approach Road —a key initiative under the ‘Marumalarchikkana Paathai’ project—was held this morning – on Saturday, 04th October 2025 in Kurikadduvan. Funded by public tax revenue, the project aims to enhance road infrastructure across the Northern Province. In addition, a significant milestone was reached with the signing of an agreement to establish the first-ever fuel filling station in the Neduntheevu Divisional Secretariat Division, marking a new chapter in the region’s development.
Speaking at the event, the Hon. Governor emphasized a point he often raises in discussions with the Chairman of the Road Development Authority: “When Hon. Minister Bimal Rathnayake is in charge of this department, the Northern Province receives the funding it needs.” He noted that Hon. Minister Bimal Rathnayake consistently prioritizes the North in every project he proposes — a commitment that has proven true time and again.
Reflecting on past efforts, the Governor added, “During my time as the Jaffna District Secretary, I worked hard to push for the reconstruction of the Kurikadduvan Road and the landing strip. Unfortunately, those efforts did not materialize then. Today, it has finally become a reality — and that makes this moment truly special.” He further remarked “This government is demonstrating its commitment not through words, but through action. We are witnessing real and meaningful change across the Northern Province.”
The Hon. Governor further stated, Many ministers are now approaching issues concerning the Northern Province with a positive attitude. This is a true blessing for our people in the North. I was first appointed as the Assistant Government Agent for the Neduntheevu region, so I am well aware of the hardships faced by the people there. The establishment of a fuel filling station in the region is a remarkable step forward. I am confident that such development initiatives will continue under the tenure of this government.
The event was graced by the presence of several distinguished guests, including Hon. Ministers Bimal Rathnayake and R. Chandrasekhar, Members of Parliament K. Ilankumaran, S. Sribavanandharaja, and J. Rajeevan, Jaffna District Secretary Mr. M. Pratheepan, Divisional Secretaries of Velanai and Neduntheevu, the Chairman of the Road Development Authority, the Northern Provincial Directorof Road Development Department, District Engineers, the Director of the Northern Provincial Road Development Authority, the Chairman of the Northern Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority, members of the Neduntheevu Multipurpose Cooperative Society, and members of the public.
As part of the first phase, road development work will be undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs. 299 million. Simultaneously, the Kurikadduvan Jetty is set to be renovated at a cost of Rs. 800 million. It is also noteworthy that the Hon. Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake, has given his assurance that 3.2 kilometers of the main access road leading to Kurikadduvan will be fully reconstructed in the coming year.
