The very first letter I wrote to His Excellency the President after assuming office was to request the reconstruction of the Vadduvakal Bridge – Hon. Governor

The happiness of living in one’s native land cannot be found anywhere else, no matter how much comfort one may have elsewhere. You, who migrated in 1984 and endured many hardships, are now back living on your own land. It is a great joy to see this,” said the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.

The Thirukkuda Nanneerattu Peruvila of the Kokkilai Arulmigu Kannakai Amman Temple was held on Friday morning (29.08.2025). In the evening, the temple’s souvenir book and a compact disc were released, with the Governor attending as the chief guest and formally launching them.
Speaking at the event, the Governor said, ‘I first learned about Kokkilai and Odiyamalai during my studies, and I remember reading in the newspapers in 1984 about the injustices suffered by the people there. When I assumed office as District Secretary of this district in 2010, I felt a strong desire to visit these villages. With special permission, I was able to visit them, but at that time the area was so heavily covered with landmines that it was hardly visible.

I then requested the demining companies to expedite the resettlement process, and they responded positively. At the same time, the UNDP extended its cooperation by constructing houses. While I was carrying this work forward, I was transferred to Mannar, which I left with some concern. However, within 10 months, I was reappointed as the Mullaitivu District Secretary. After that, I was able to undertake various initiatives, including resettlement.

Even after being transferred to Jaffna and later retiring from my post, I continued to have a special interest in the Mullaitivu district. Many of those who had worked with me, as well as the local people, remained in contact, and I would often inquire about the situation in these areas.

I was always interested in two things that needed to be done for this district. The Vadduvakal Bridge and the other was the Kokkilai Bridge. I had given special importance to both of these. Even though I had submitted a request to construct the Kokkilai Bridge in 2012, it was not possible in the circumstances at that time.

The Governor stated, ‘The very first letter I wrote to His Excellency the President after assuming office was regarding the reconstruction of the Vadduvakal Bridge. The foundation stone for this bridge will be laid by His Excellency on the 2nd September. The Kokkilai Bridge will also be constructed during the tenure of this government, and that will happen soon. Once completed, your village will become a very important locality and will continue to prosper.
