Vocational education institutions in the Northern Province are largely attended by individuals from other provinces, while participation from local residents remains notably low. This trend must be reversed. The Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, Mr. N. Vethanayahan, emphasized the importance of recognizing the value of vocational education and urged everyone to understand its necessity.
Governor Mr. N. Vethanayahan attended as the chief guest at a certificate presentation ceremony held on Thursday evening (17 July 2025) at the Jaffna District Secretariat Auditorium. The event was organized under the leadership of R. Thirumurugan, Jaffna District Manager of the National Apprenticeship Industrial Training Authority
Vocational training has become increasingly essential in today’s world, with its importance now widely recognized. As government job opportunities continue to shrink, vocational education offers a vital pathway to employment in the private sector and overseas. Programs like these certificate courses equip individuals with practical skills that enhance their employability and open up new career opportunities.
Efforts are currently underway to rebuild factories that were destroyed during the war in the Northern Province. Once these facilities are restored, individuals with vocational training are likely to be given priority for employment opportunities.
In the future, it will be nearly impossible to secure employment without proper training. Therefore, those of you receiving certificates today have a responsibility to spread awareness about the importance of vocational education within your communities.
The Governor further noted that although school dropout rates are higher among males, it is females who are more actively participating in vocational training programs. He urged that greater efforts be made to encourage male school dropouts to pursue vocational education and skill development.
Jaffna District Secretary M. Pratheepan attended the event as a special guest.
