The Governor of the Northern Province, Hon. N. Vethanayahan, emphasized that the government, led by His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has maintained funding for our projects despite the ongoing disaster situations in the country. This reflects the exemplary financial management of the current administration.
An event to provide livelihood assistance to female-headed households and women entrepreneurs, organized by the Northern Provincial Ministry of Women’s Affairs and the Northern Provincial Department of Industries, was held on Saturday morning, 20 December 2025, at the Northern Provincial Department of Industries. The Governor made these remarks while participating in the event and addressing the gathering.
The Governor further stated at the event, which was chaired by the Secretary to the Provincial Ministry of Women’s Affairs, M. Nanthagopalan, that the primary objective of the government is to improve people’s livelihoods and strengthen the rural economy. He noted that these assistance programs are part of that broader vision. He also emphasized that the government has ensured provincial financial allocations are released on time, enabling development activities to proceed without hindrance.
“Our responsibility does not end with the provision of assistance. The relevant authorities will continuously monitor whether these schemes are achieving their intended objectives. Many small- and medium-scale entrepreneurs in the North have reached significant levels of success through their hard work, and we are prepared to create market access and export opportunities for them. At present, the Northern Province’s contribution to the country’s gross national product remains low. Through livelihood development initiatives such as these, we aim to change that situation and enhance the North’s contribution to the national economy,” the Governor stated.
At the event, assistance was provided on a full-subsidy basis to 80 female-headed households engaged in food production, agriculture, small-scale industries, and handicrafts through the Northern Provincial Ministry of Women’s Affairs. In addition, assistance was extended on a half-subsidy basis to 37 entrepreneurs through the Northern Provincial Department of Industries.
Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic Resources and Marine Resources, R. Chandrasekar, attended the event as the Chief Guest. Also present were Hon. Member of Parliament K. Ilankumaran; Additional District Secretary of Jaffna District, K. Sivakaran; Divisional Secretary of Chavakachcheri, S. Sathiyasothi; Acting Director of the Department of Industries, Mrs. K. Thushiya; Assistant Chief Secretary of the Northern Provincial Chief Secretary’s Secretariat, Mrs. Annet Ninthusha Anthony Dinesh; and the District Coordination Committee Chairman’s Coordinator for Jaffna District, S. Kapilan were participated
