The Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, stated categorically that the government will utilize the President’s Fund entirely for the welfare of poor people.
The Prime Minister made this statement while addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest at the final event for this year of the special programme implemented through the President’s Fund to honor students who achieved outstanding results at the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination. The event was held with great distinction today – on Sunday 21 December 2025, at the ‘Nelum Piyasa’ Auditorium in Iranamadu, Kilinochchi.
Under this programme, students who demonstrated exceptional excellence in each subject stream on a district basis at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination for the 2023/2024 academic year were selected. Accordingly, during the event, financial assistance cheques valued at Rs. 100,000 each, along with certificates of appreciation, were officially presented to 274 students who achieved remarkable success in the Northern Province.
The primary objective of this programme is to encourage students who achieve excellence in education and to extend support to talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The event was graced by several distinguished guests, including the Hon. Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, the Hon. Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources R. Chandrasekaran, the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan, and the Hon. Deputy Minister of Cooperative Development Upali Samarasinghe.
In addition, Hon. Members of Parliament S. Sribavanantharaja and K. Ilankumaran, the Chief Secretary of the Northern Province, the Secretary to the Provincial Ministry of Education – Northern Province, District Secretaries, senior government officials, as well as a large number of students and parents participated in this special event.
