The main issue faced by farmers for a long time is the lack of proper market opportunities – Hon. Governor

It is our expectation that farmers should receive fair prices for their produce, and that they should transform from mere producers into entrepreneurs as well, stated the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.

The signing ceremony of the management and operational agreement between the Jaffna Organic Farmer Public Unlisted Company and Agro Benefit Lanka Limited (ABL), organized by the Sri Lanka Agripreneurs’ Forum (SLAF), took place on Friday evening, 12 December 2025.

The Governor made the above remarks while addressing the event as the chief guest at the banana and mango collection and processing center established under the Agriculture Modernization Project in Puttur.

While further expressing his views there:
The primary issue that our farmers have been facing for a long time is the lack of proper market opportunities for them. I have undertaken various efforts in the past to resolve this issue and create market opportunities. Today’s agreement signing event is a key part of that.

This is an experimental and pioneering initiative. The success of this project depends entirely on you, the farmers. We can take this project to the next level by maintaining the quality of produce and ensuring continuous supply.

I express my gratitude to the Sri Lanka Agripreneurs’ Forum for their cooperation in this effort. It is commendable that they personally visited the field, assessed the situation, and initiated this project in a very short time, said the Governor.

At the event, Dr. Selvanathan Anojan, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Agripreneurs’ Forum, participated and briefed the operations of the project and future plans. Following that, the agreement between the two companies was officially signed.

Many participants attended the event, including the Provincial Director of Agriculture for the Northern Province, the Deputy Provincial Director of Agriculture for Jaffna District, the Assistant Commissioner of the Department of Agrarian Services, officials and farmers.
