The Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, emphasized the need for the Kallundai settlement village to develop into a thriving community with all essential facilities, similar to other regions. He urged everyone to work together to achieve this goal.
The Kallundai United Community Centre, constructed in the Kallundai settlement village with the support of S. Tharmakulasingam and A. Yogarajah through the Child Poverty Relief Fund, was officially inaugurated by the Governor on Friday, 5th September 2025.
The Governor, who attended the event as the chief guest, recalled in his speech: “When I served as the Jaffna District Secretary, we identified individuals who were occupying land elsewhere without legal ownership. After discussions, we resettled one group in Navatkuzhi and the other here in Kallundai. At that time, I received full support from Mr. S. Muralitharan, who was the Additional District Secretary, and Mrs. Yashotha, the Divisional Secretary of Sandilipay. We secured various funds through Mr. Sivagnanasothi, then Secretary to the Ministry, and implemented the resettlement initiative. Unfortunately, after I retired from the position of District Secretary, I was no longer able to continue supporting this settlement village directly.”
The Governor further stated, “Time and again, the people of this area have been forced to relocate. Roads need to be repaired, land must be filled, and land rights must be granted to some residents. The current Divisional Secretary, Mr. K. Prabhakaramoorthy, will take responsibility for these matters and work with us to implement the necessary changes. Our goal is for the people of this area to enjoy a better quality of life — and we are committed to making that a reality.”
The Divisional Secretary of Sandilipay and the Chairman of the Valikamam Southwest Pradeshiya Sabha were also present at the event.
