The Gynecology Department at Kilinochchi Hospital must be made operational without delay – Hon. Governor.

The Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, stated that arrangements should be made to gradually operationalize the Northern Provincial Gynecology Hospital—established within the Kilinochchi District Hospital complex with financial support from the Government of the Netherlands—as soon as possible, assuring that all necessary cooperation will be extended.

A discussion on the operation of the hospital was held at the Governor’s Secretariat this evening, Monday (25.08.2025).

Opening the discussion, the Honorable Governor remarked that unfounded rumors are circulating, claiming the hospital’s equipment will be transferred to other provinces before the facility has even been opened. He emphasized that no such decision has been made and urged the public not to be misled by such misinformation.

The Governor stated that, among the four hospitals established in the Northern Province with financial assistance from the Government of the Netherlands, only the Mankulam Hospital has received staffing approval, while the remaining three are still awaiting such approval. He highlighted that, despite this, the medical unit opened at the Point Pedro Base Hospital is operating effectively using existing resources. The Governor further noted that the necessary support is being provided to ensure the smooth functioning of that unit

Similarly, the Governor requested that the Northern Provincial Gynecology Hospital, established within the Kilinochchi District Hospital, be made operational without further delay. He also assured that steps would be taken to address the current shortage of human resources.

Following this, Northern Provincial Director of Health Services Saman Pathirana, Kilinochchi District Regional Director of Health Services Asela, Kilinochchi District Hospital Director Prabath, and medical experts at the hospital shared their views and insights.

They expressed their views on the challenges of operating the hospital with limited personnel and emphasized that operations could begin gradually under the current circumstances.In conclusion, the Governor reiterated his position, instructing that the hospital be made operational as soon as possible. He assured that the necessary support and cooperation would be provided to facilitate its gradual operation.

The discussion was attended by the Secretary to the Governor Northern Province, the Secretary to the Northern Provincial Ministry of Health, the Northern Provincial Director of Health Services, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Jaffna, the Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, the Kilinochchi Regional Director of Health Services, the Director of the Kilinochchi District Hospital, as well as doctors, nursing officers, and members of the Patients’ Welfare Association of the Kilinochchi District Hospital.
