The book “Clear Vision, Bright Futures”, authored by medical expert Dr. Malaravan, was ceremonially released by the Hon. Governor.

The Northern Province has set an example for other provinces in Sri Lanka by conducting eye examinations for all students and providing free glasses to those in need. Building on this initiative, the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, announced plans to extend eye examination programs next year to students entering pre-school and Grade 1, in collaboration with multiple partners.

The ‘Naguleshwari Vasudevan’ Free Eye Examination and Glasses Distribution Scheme for school students in the Northern Province was implemented through collaboration between the Northern Provincial Ministries of Health and Education, under the leadership of Dr. M. Malaravan, Ophthalmologist at Jaffna Teaching Hospital. Financial support for the scheme was provided by the Alaka Foundation (Malaysia) through Assist RR (UK and Sri Lanka).

Through this project, 1,150 selected teachers were trained to conduct eye examinations for all students in the Northern Province. A team led by medical expert Dr. M. Malaravan then carried out eye examinations for the students identified by the trained teachers. Approximately 4.49 percent of the 9,313 students examined were found to require glasses, which were subsequently provided free of charge.

The book “Clear Vision, Bright Futures”, which documents this entire process and provides related recommendations, was released by the Governor on Friday – 31st October 2025, at the Governor’s Secretariat.

Following the book release, the Governor, serving as the chief guest, addressed the gathering and expressed his gratitude to the team led by medical expert Dr. Malaravan for successfully completing the project within the stipulated timeframe. He also extended his thanks to Dr. Velayudham Sarveshwaran for providing the financial support necessary for the initiative. The Governor emphasized that this project serves as a model for other provinces in Sri Lanka and is a true blessing for the Northern Province.

Provincial children who were previously visually impaired now have the opportunity to see a new world and enhance their educational experiences. Many children with visual impairments do not visit hospitals, and some parents are unaware of their children’s condition. This project, which proactively sought out these children, has successfully addressed these challenges and made a meaningful difference in their lives.

Many provincial officers have actively supported this project. Even those who initially questioned its necessity have come to recognize its benefits and later joined in its implementation. The Governor stated that, taking into account the recommendations provided by medical expert Dr. Malaravan, such cooperation will continue as the project progresses.

The event was attended by the Secretary to the Governor, the Secretary to the Ministry of Education – Northern Province, the Secretary to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs – Northern Province, the Provincial Director of Education, Zonal Education Directors, Assistant Secretaries, the Dean of the Medical Faculty of Jaffna, medical experts, and numerous other officials and dignitaries.
