“Solutions must be forwarded so that the affected people do not have to face another disaster again.” – Hon. Governor at the Vavuniya District Coordinating Committee meeting

Hon. Governor of Northern Province N.Vethanayahan stated that, it was only because coordinated actions were carried out without any differences between the central and provincial administrations during the disaster occurred the Northern Province that the normal lives of the affected people could be restored, at least to some extent, in a very short period of time.

The Vavuniya District Coordinating Committee meeting was held today – on Tuesday 09 December 2025, at the District Secretariat. The meeting was co-chaired by Hon. Upali Samarasinghe, Chairman of the Vavuniya District Coordinating Committee and Deputy Minister, and Hon. N. Vethanayahan, Co-Chairman and Governor of the Northern Province.

The meeting began with the welcome address by District Secretary Sarath Chandra, followed by the speech of Hon. Deputy Minister Upali Samarasinghe.

Speaking further, Northern Province Governor stated:
“We must take efforts to find permanent solutions so that the affected people do not have to face such a disaster again. His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has also been strongly emphasizing the same. Our responsibility should not stop at merely restoring people’s normal lives; it must extend to fully rebuilding their livelihoods that have been completely destroyed.”

At the meeting, disaster impacts and relief efforts were discussed in detail. In particular, the activities of the Department of Forest Conservation were debated at length. Progress on the decisions taken at the previous Coordinating Committee meeting, the challenges facing the district, and future development plans were also constructively discussed.

The Coordinating Committee meeting was attended by Parliamentarians from the Vanni Electoral District, Chairmen of Local Authorities, the Chief Secretary of the Northern Province, Secretaries of Provincial Ministries, Heads of Departments, and many other government officials.
