School Principals from the schools in offshore Islands of Jaffna District Meet and Discuss with the Hon. Governor

School principals from the schools in offshore islands of Jaffna District met with the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, at the Governor’s Secretariat on the evening of Friday, 17th October 2025, to discuss matters related to the decision by the Central Ministry of Education to remove certain schools from the list of extremely difficult areas.

The principals highlighted that 6 out of 8 schools in Delft, 3 schools in Analaitheevu, and 1 out of 2 schools in Eluvaithivu are slated to be removed from the extremely difficult area designation. They pointed out that there is already reluctance among teachers to serve in these areas, and removing the extremely difficult status, along with the associated allowances, would further worsen the situation.

Additionally, it was brought to the Governor’s attention that while other government employees working on these offshore islands receive a risk allowance, teachers have not been provided with this benefit so far.

The Governor assured the principals that he would directly engage with the relevant ministries to address these concerns.

The Secretary to the Governor, Mr. S. Sathiyaseelan, also participated in this meeting.
