The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, stated that healthcare personnel come to the Northern Province from other provinces, and only by properly providing them with the necessary accommodation facilities can the people of the province receive complete and effective services from them.
The ceremony to hand over the renovated quarters at the Mankulam Base Hospital in the Mullaitivu District was held today – on Tuesday 27 January 2026, within the hospital premises.
Participating as the Chief Guest and declaring the quarters open, the Governor made the above remarks in his address.
He further stated:
After the end of the war, during the period when I served as the Government Agent of the Mullaitivu District, the Sri Lanka Army had extended significant support in expediting the resettlement of the people. Similarly, at present too, the Army has contributed its manpower for these renovation works carried out using funds of the Northern Provincial Council.
The Army Engineering Division completed the work within the stipulated time, and due to their contribution, approximately 6 million rupees in public funds has been saved. He expressed his gratitude to them for this support.
Under the financial allocations of the Northern Provincial Council, renovation work is being carried out on the doctors’ quarters, nurses’ quarters, paramedical staff quarters, drivers’ quarters, and the ambulance parking area at the Mankulam Base Hospital.
As the first phase, the fully renovated nurses’ quarters, ambulance parking area, and drivers’ quarters were opened today. The nurses’ quarters comprise eight rooms, a kitchen, and a dining area, along with other facilities.
The event was attended by the Vanni Area Commander, Major General Pradeep Kulathunga; the Provincial Secretary to the Ministry of Health – Northern Province, Mrs. P. Jayarani; the Provincial Director of Health Services of the Northern Province, Dr. Saman Pathirana; the Regional Director of Health Services – Mullaitivu District, Dr. Umasankar; the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Kaayan; hospital staff; and members of the public.
