A field day on “Promotion of Murunga Cultivation under Drip Irrigation” was held at Tholpuram AI range in Jaffna District under the chairmanship of Agriculture Instructor, Tholpuram in one of the farmer Mr.Pushparajan’s field on 16.10.2020 with the participation of more farmers.
In the above field day Mr.S.Sivakumar, Provincial Director of Agriculture, Northern Province and Mrs.A.Srirangan, Deputy Provincial Director of Agriculture, Jaffna District were participated as special guests. Mrs.N.Vijayan, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Officers from Central Department of Agriculture, Technical Assistant of Agri Business for GAP, Officers from the office of Deputy Provincial Director of Agriculture, Jaffna, Subject Matter Officers, Woman Agriculture Extension and the farmers in the particular village interested in Murunga cultivation participated in the above field day.
In the above field day Subject Matter Officers, Technical Assistant of Agri Business for GAP, Agriculture Instructor from Tholpuram AI Range were shared their valuable messages to farming community to promote Murunga Cultivation. Mrs.A.Srirangan, Deputy Provincial Director of Agriculture, Jaffna District has told that Murunga can be planted to obtain Drum Sticks as well as Murunga leaves.
Mr.S.Sivakumar, Provincial Director of Agriculture, Northern Province has told that we can escaped from the diseases like anemia by adding Murunga leaves to our foods such as “Piddu”. We have to obtain cuttings in well bearing Murunga Trees from the Murunga Cultivation established by seeds inorder to get high yield. An idea has been suggested to obtain Murunga cuttings from the field of the Innovative farmer Mr.Pushparajan’s field and promte Tholpuram Farmers in Murunga Cultivation and establish a society for Murunga Cultivation in Tholpuram area. A soup made by Murunga leaves which is suitable to the Corona pandemic disease spreading period was served to all who has participated in the above field day.
