Representatives of the World Bank, officials from the Primary Healthcare System Enhancing Project operating under the Ministry of Health, and the Regional Director of Health Services, Jaffna District, met with the Governor on Thursday – 09th October 2025, at the Governor’s Secretariat and held discussions.
The Primary Healthcare System Enhancing Project, funded by the World Bank, will be implemented from 2024 to 2028 across all nine provinces of Sri Lanka. In accordance with this, a financial allocation of 500 million rupees for 2026 and 750 million rupees each for 2027 and 2028 has been earmarked for the Northern Province.
Under this allocation, Primary Health Care Centers in the Northern Province will be upgraded. These upgrades will be planned to meet current needs, taking into account the differences between the original requirements when the centers were first established and the present-day demands.
The representatives of the World Bank and the project requested the cooperation of the Northern Provincial Council in implementing this project. They also informed the Governor that the Northern Province was the first region they visited in connection with this initiative.
The Governor assured that all necessary cooperation would be extended for the successful implementation of the project.
