The first-ever Mullaitivu District Chess Tournament in memory of National Hero Pandaravanniyan was officially inaugurated by the Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, Mr. N. Vethanayahan, on Saturday morning (16.08.2025) at Mullaitivu Maha Vidyalaya. This tournament, organized for school students in the Mullaitivu District, is a joint initiative of the Mullaitivu District Secretariat, the Mullaitivu District Education and Development Trust Fund, and the Mullaitivu District Chess Association.
Inaugurating the event, the Honorable Governor stated that engaging in chess in no way hinders a student’s education. On the contrary, he noted, “Chess supports the development of the brain and enhances critical thinking skills.” He emphasized the importance of encouraging youth to participate in sports and artistic pursuits, as such activities contribute to their personal growth and help them stay focused and disciplined in the future.
The event was presided over by Mullaitivu District Secretary Mr. A. Umamageshwaran, and was also graced by the presence of the Chief Secretary of the Northern Province, Mrs. Thanuja Murugesan.
