“Our primary goal is to help farmers become better farmers and entrepreneurs, rather than merely wage laborers on farms. We will never forget the farmers whose efforts enable the people of the North to live self-sufficiently, even in times of crisis,” said Hon. Governor of Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The Northern Province Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Services, Livestock Development, Irrigation, Fisheries, Water Supply, and Environment organized an award ceremony today – Thursday, 20.11.2025, at the Nanattan Pradeshiya Sabha Cultural Hall in Mannar to honor outstanding farmers, ranchers, and freshwater fishing associations. Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan, attending as the chief guest, made the above remarks while addressing the gathering. The event was chaired by the Ministry Secretary, S. Sivasri.
He further stated: “Agriculture, livestock, irrigation, and fishing form the foundation of the livelihoods of the people of the Northern Province. These sectors not only sustain our economy but also reflect the cultural identity of our society. Our ancestors built their lives around these fields, but today the situation has changed. Therefore, it is only by honoring and recognizing those engaged in these vital sectors that we can inspire and attract the younger generation to take them forward.”
“The awareness play presented at today’s event clearly highlighted the dangers posed by chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides. While we adopt high-yield technologies, it is equally important to return to natural fertilizers and traditional agricultural practices. After enduring long-standing challenges, the Northern Province is once again moving toward self-sufficiency. Although it is one of the most fertile regions in Sri Lanka, our contribution to the national GDP remains low. It is only our farmers who can change this.”
“The Northern Province is experiencing rapid growth in tourism. It is a great advantage for us that Lonely Planet magazine has identified Jaffna as one of the best tourist destinations for 2026. Agro-tourism, which integrates agriculture with tourism, is emerging as a major income-generating sector. Our unique food products and traditional farming experiences have strong potential to attract visitors from around the world.”
“Various programs for the agricultural sector are being implemented under the guidance of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The provincial administration will introduce measures such as providing modern seed varieties, expanding farmer training, improving irrigation infrastructure, and promoting value-addition processes,” he said.
“On this occasion, awards were presented to the best farmers, ranchers, and fishing associations selected under seven categories across the five districts of the Northern Province, as well as at the provincial level. Equipment was also distributed under the designated donation fund.”
“The event was attended by Hon. Member of Parliament M. Jagatheeswaran as the guest of honor. Special guests included Chief Secretary of Northern Province Mrs. Thanuja Murugesan; Mannar District Secretary K. Kanageswaran; the Chairman of the Nanattan Pradeshiya Sabha; the Divisional Secretary, and Heads of Departments.”
