Northern Province Governor Leads Discussion to Launch ‘Safe Road, Safe Health’ Accident Prevention Mechanism

The discussion to develop the mechanism related to mitigating and preventing accidents was held under the chairmanship of the Hon.Governor.

The discussion aimed at creating the mechanism related to mitigating and preventing accidents was held at the Governor’s Secretariat yesterday evening (09.07.2025) under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayagan.

In his address, the Governor emphasized that it is everyone’s responsibility to reduce the number of accidents in the Northern Province.
Pediatrician Dr. B. Sayanthan, who has been voluntarily encouraging the accident mitigation, provided clarification about the project. He proposed the idea that the project could be implemented under the theme ‘Safe Road, Safe Health’.

He mentioned that the number of accidents and casualties are increasing in the Jaffna district. He also presented the data that motorcycles and three-wheelers face the most accidents. He also requested to set the goal of reducing accidents and casualties, creating awareness among students and drivers, and creating a sustainable safe culture.

Following this, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Jaffna, presented data on road accidents in the region, including details on fines imposed, causes of accidents, and road-related deficiencies. He noted that with the cooperation of local authorities in removing obstacles that hinder traffic flow, necessary measures could be effectively implemented. In response, the Governor instructed the Northern Province Local Government Commissioner to extend full support for this initiative.
It was decided that, in the initial phase, awareness programs targeting school students and drivers will be launched, with periodic progress review meetings scheduled to monitor implementation and outcomes..
