Northern Province Governor Hon. N. Vethanayahan emphasized that every person appointed to government service must work in a manner that does not become a burden to the chair they occupy, but instead brings honour to it.
The event to present appointment letters to 14 Revenue Inspectors selected for the Local Authorities of the Northern Provincial Council was held recently (01.12.2025) at the Governor’s Secretariat. The Governor made these remarks while addressing the gathering at this modest event, held simply due to the recent natural disaster.
Further expressing his views, he said:
“Many people seek government service with the sole aim of obtaining a pension. However, this is truly a blessing granted by God to serve the people. There are those who misuse this opportunity for their own personal benefit. You must not be among them.
“All members of the public who come seeking your service are your own relatives. You must welcome them with a pleasant attitude and serve them honestly, promptly, and with kindness.
“Today, every local authority is compelled to increase its revenue. In collecting and contributing this revenue, your role as Revenue Inspectors is immense. Only if you work with integrity will the councils’ income increase. You must perform your duties with a deep understanding of their importance.
“You have been selected specifically for the Northern Province. Therefore, you must be prepared to serve in any part of the province. The provincial administration is ready to guide you by providing whatever additional training you may require.”
Speaking at the event, the Secretary of the Northern Province Ministry of Local Government noted that although 131 Revenue Inspector positions are approved for the province, 51 vacancies existed. Approval has now been granted to fill 14 of those vacancies, and these appointments are being made accordingly.
Officials including the Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province, the Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government – Northern Province, the Deputy Chief Secretary – Administration, the Deputy Chief Secretary – Personnel and Training, the Commissioner of Local Government – Northern Province, and the Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government participated in the event.
