The Hon. Chairpersons and Secretaries of the Local Government Councils must work in unity, setting aside notions of status or hierarchy. Regardless of who holds a higher position, our shared responsibility is to make the most of the opportunity to serve the people. We are, after all, ordinary individuals entrusted with a public duty, and we must remain accessible to the community and responsive to their needs. The Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, Mr. N. Vethanayahan, emphasized that everyone must prioritize meeting the expectations of the people.
An awareness workshop under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ project for the chairmen, deputy chairmen, and Assistant commissioners of all local government councils in the Northern Province was held on Wednesday morning, 20th August 2025, at the Northern Province Local Government Commissioner’s Office in Kaithady. The session was conducted under the chairmanship of the Local Government Commissioner, Mrs. Thevanantini Babu.
Inaugurating the event, the Governor stated, “The ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ project covers a wide range of areas. Alongside physical cleanliness, the quality of our services must also be enhanced. You are expected to deliver services that are friendly, prompt, and of high quality—because that is what the people rightfully expect from us
In the past, the public often faced long delays in obtaining assessment tax name changes and building permits. This must change. Just as we attend to our own needs without delay, we must ensure that the needs of the people are met promptly. This is the rightful expectation of the public—and it aligns with the goals of the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ project, which calls for timely, efficient, and people-centered service delivery. Each of you must foster the belief that when people come to us, they will receive justice. Only then can we deliver truly excellent service,” said the Governor.
It is noteworthy that Mrs. Suganthi, Assistant Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department, and Mrs. Sarathanjali Manoharan, Senior Assistant Secretary to the President, participated in the workshop as resource persons.
